About our garden and nursery
Heaven Scent Garden and Nursery occupies two hectares on a working apple farm against the mountains in the Elgin Valley of the Western Cape near Grabouw (approximately 90km from Cape Town).
The original family garden has developed over the last six years into a nursery and cutting garden from which we supply the local farm stalls and guest houses (www.southhill.co.za) with bunches of flowers.
All our flowers are grown out in the open and as organically as possible. We make our own compost and vermicompost, which we use in the garden and nursery bags.
The Flower Cutting Garden
I started selling Tussie Mussie posies at Houw Hoek Farm Stall and as their popularity grew, we developed the garden to increase the number of posies and bunches that we could produce. That was when the garden began expanding at the expense of the neighbouring apple orchard! At this stage we have taken out 24 rows of trees, and I have my eye on a few more!
Once we had taken out the apple trees we proceeded to plant the area up with flowers and foliage. I couldn't bring myself to plant the various types and varieties in functional blocks which would have been more sensible and easier to pick!
It is a working garden but is very relaxing to work in - a far cry from your usual cut flower suppliers. You are more than welcome to experience the garden for yourself and wander through it on one of our regular Open Days.
You can buy our flowers at Houw Hoek Farm Stall, Peregrine Farm Stall, The Orchard Farm Stall and Keurbos Nursery.
The Plant Nursery
The Nursery part of Heaven Scent Garden and Nursery is a result of us propagating plants for our own use and visitors expressing an interest in buying our plants. It has grown extremely fast and we now have a good selection of plants some of which are not always that readily available at the usual nurseries.
We concentrate on plants that are good for cutting for the vase, as well as indigenous plants.
Plants can be bought from Heaven Scent Nursery itself. The nursery is open to the public once a month. If you are passing and would like to stop by, please telephone and make an appointment as I am not always on the farm, as I also work on landscaping projects with Riaan Maritz of The Garden Company - www.thegardenco.co.za
